Viscous Fingering Dynamics and Flow Regimes of Miscible Displacements in a Sealed Hele-Shaw Cell

Miscible viscous fingering occurs when a less fluid displaces more one in porous media or Hele–Shaw cell. Such flow instabilities are of particular interest variety applications flows and displacements subsurface energy environment systems. In this study, we investigate the miscible dynamics experimentally using water to displace glycerol sealed cell with two wells located it instead at boundary corners. We comprehensively examine spatial temporal variations dynamics, different regimes, how they affected by injection rate control pressure outlet. Alongside widely recognized diffusion-dominated convection-dominated identify three new regimes: slow expansion regime prior breakthrough, rapid shrinkage immediately after uniform, without instability. Each is characterized interesting which has not been reported previously. The duration each depends on whether constant production applied swept area, interfacial length, count fingers also quantitatively examined. This study provides insights into fundamental mechanisms for such as CO2 sequestration, hydrogen storage, enhanced oil recovery, groundwater contaminate remediation.
